The days of artificial intelligence are far from over – It already affects how we shop, how our phones respond to us, and even how companies make decisions.  One subfield of the AI world that has attracted attention and raised concerns is autonomous agents. These systems are made to function independently, without constantly awaiting commands.

You’ve probably come across them without realizing it. A chatbot that handles customer service late at night? An algorithm that places trades in the stock market faster than any human could? Both demonstrate the operation of agentic AI.  They promise scale and efficiency, but their independence also raises the challenging question of how much we can trust them.

This is not a transitory interest for top leaders. The financial health, regulatory compliance, and reputation of the organization are all at risk when these systems are not trusted. The challenge is finding a balance between the real risks, bias, security vulnerabilities, and unintended consequences that can get out of hand, and the gains in productivity that they represent.

Consider them to be virtual coworkers who don’t require frequent check-ins.  A customer service robot that picks up knowledge from each exchange and modifies responses as needed?  That’s one.  A real-time logistics system that reroutes delivery routes to avoid traffic jams?  One more.  These agents are capable of analyzing data, making plans for the future, and even working together with other systems to build an automated decision-making network.

They differ from traditional AI tools in that they are autonomous and adaptable.   Earlier systems used static models, where you asked a question and they answered. Conversely, agentic systems operate more like problem solvers. They are able to break a task down into smaller, more manageable tasks, modify their strategy, and assess the outcomes. Because of the possibility of unforeseen consequences, they are both powerful and unpredictable; however, their independence also contributes to their effectiveness.

Executives in business should understand this distinction.    While deploying an autonomous agent transfers some control, using a standard AI tool may reduce manual labor.    Therefore, when considering adoption, trust, accountability, and supervision become essential.

For C-suite executives, these risks are no theoretical abstractions; instead, they impinge directly on brand credibility, customer relationships, and financial security. The answer is not to eschew autonomous agents, but to get the lay of the land before adopting them into high-stakes operations.

  1. Start with pilot projects.

Begin with pilot officers in controlled settings before rolling out agentic AI across the whole business. Prior to spending money on full integration, this will allow teams to assess the value of the system, identify blind spots, and pilot-test its functionality. Prior to leveraging an independent agent for risk assessment or detecting fraud, for instance, a bank may first apply it to customer service.

  1. Establish Multidisciplinary Groups

The IT department cannot handle governance on its own. There has to be a team that includes legal, human resources, business strategy, and more to govern the process. With a cross-functional team, all risks will be assessed from angles such as ethical, operational, and financial.

  1. Implement an ongoing observation process

Self-governing agents do not follow the simple set-and-forget process. Their behavior and process changes over time with real-time data feeds. So, to keep a check on the AI’s behavior, it is important for leaders to have a continuous monitoring system.

Autonomous agents are here to stay, and any organization aiming to thrive must foster trust in their use. Agentic AI offers unmatched flexibility, speed, and efficiency, but without clear accountability and governance, its risks can outweigh its rewards. Leaders must ensure the benefits do not come at the cost of oversight.

Leaders must find a purposeful balance, embrace innovation, but anchor it in trust, responsibility, and proper oversight to ensure agentic AI drives progress, not pitfalls.
